Guide

Why cases are gone before release day.

Allocation is the quiet mechanism behind almost every “sold out in minutes” headline. Publishers allot print runs to distributors; distributors allot cases to accounts; by release day the product has an owner. Here is how it works and what it means for you.

Guide

The product has an owner before it exists.

A set is allocated months before it is printed. The quantity each distributor receives, and the quantity each of their accounts receives, is fixed in advance based on history, volume and relationships. What reaches an open shelf is what was left over.

Delivery worldwide. Dubai and the United States are our home markets, and we deliver fully insured to collectors in any other country as well.

How allocation works

  • Publisher to distributor: each regional distributor receives a fixed share of the print run
  • Distributor to account: shops and large buyers receive cases in proportion to their history and volume
  • Account to customer: pre-orders and loyal buyers absorb most of it; the remainder, if any, reaches the open shelf
  • Result: the most anticipated sets are effectively sold before release

Why it matters to collectors

If you are not an allocated account, you are buying from someone who is: at their price, on their terms, with their level of care. For Japanese product, the allocation happens in Japan and the export market receives nothing directly. For English product in the Gulf, the regional distributor's share is small and arrives late.

How Grail Concierge works with allocation

We work with allocated accounts and distributors across Japan, Europe and North America, so a client's request can be placed against allocation rather than against whatever reaches the open market. Where allocation has already shipped, we source from the accounts that received it and from private holders, and verify every unit before you commit.

Questions about allocation

Can a private collector get allocation directly?

Rarely. Allocation goes to established trade accounts. A private sourcing service that works with those accounts is the practical route.

Does allocation apply to Japanese product too?

Yes, and more tightly, because Japanese distribution is domestic. Export supply is entirely secondary.

Is allocated product more expensive?

At allocation it is priced at wholesale; the premium appears when it is resold. Sourcing close to allocation is how the premium is kept down.
